Are the Dupehunter Professional executables digital signed?

Are the Dupehunter executables digital signed?

Yes! Beginning with version 6.5.0.3080 the Dupehunter.exe and also the whole setup file called DHPro.exe are digital signed by Globalsign!

If you downloading a setup from third party sites pay attention to this certificate. Especially under Vista and the User Access Control (UAC) the user is getting a message from the system in a light blue message box, not yellow or red! Also for the Setup file the description is named as "Dupehunter Professional Installation" by "Carsten Heidtke". As a second way you can call the properties of the setup file by using the right mouse click on the file. On the tab "Digital Signature" you should find our signature. If not, do not hesitate to contact us, where the setup comes from (Download Site).

How can i view or unzip a SQX archive?

If you are using the option in Dupehunter Professional to create self-extracting archives there is no additional program needed.

Otherwise, actually 2 compression programs supports SQX format.

For personal use you can uncompress SQX archives with the freeware ZipStar. For commercial use have to work with the program Squeez. This is Shareware.

Both programs are under Copyright of Speedproject in Germany. Follow the link below to get more information about both programs:

Can i save the results of the search?

A:
Yes, you can export the results to various formats like HTML, RTF, XML, DOC, XLS, CSV and Unicode.

Our recommendation is to use the XML export format, which offers high speed, supports extremely large lists and can be compressed. Compression of the XML exports is only available in the Corporate Edition.

Interaction with Antivirus programs

A: Antivirus programs like Norton AntiVirus or other watching in the background for file operations.

It`s a good idea to stop the watcher during a search in Dupehunter Professional or if not possible for security reasons, change the settings that only on write access of files the watcher will be activated.

This will increase the performance considerable! Tested with 1 million files and activated Antivirus program like Norton Antivirus or H+B EDV AntiVir Dupehunter Professional needs more than 27 minutes for execution. After changing the settings of AntiVir program, Dupehunter needs only 9.5 minutes.

For how many files Dupehunter was tested?

A: Dupehunter Professional was successfully tested with 15 million files.

How fast is Dupehunter Professional?

A: Depending on various environments the speed is very different. But on a 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 with activated Hyper-Threading we successfully tested a speed of 165 Gigabyte per hour.

The speed for some big files is much better as for thousands of small files. A scan of 1 million very small files (each size < 100 bytes) was ready within 15 minutes.

See also the other tips here in the FAQ for speed optimization.

Do you scanned huge volumes > 200 GB?

A: Sure! We tested Dupehunter Professional with huge data volumes up to 1.8 terabyte (1800 gigabyte) within 11 hours with a speed of 165 gigabyte per hour. But bigger volumes as 1.8 terabyte are also possible.

Is there any problem on multi-processor machines?

A: Multiprocessor machines are Business computers. This are computers with 2 or more processors. This means 2 physical processors and not the Hyper-Threading-Technology from Intel. Hyper-Threading simulates a second processor by its chipset. Both can be combined. We use a Dual-XEON-Server with 2 x 2 GHz Xeon processors and this CPU`s supports also Hyper-Threading (HT). Thereby Windows XP recognize 4 processors and not only the 2 physical processors.

Dupehunter Professional has no longer problems with Hyper-Threading and Multi-processor machines!

Does the program support a Byte-for-Byte scan?

Yes, but only in the Corporate Editions.

How secure is Dupehunter professional?

Very secure. Because as of the version 4.0 Dupehunter uses 3 different algorithms with an additional file size comparison.

The recognition is always based on a mathematical calculation of the files and not on other unsecure methods. The algorithms CRC32, MD5 and SHA1 are used . MD5 and SHA1 are the highest level of the technique and are also used by state authorities, police offices and secret services.

Don't use other programs which go only according to file names, sizes etc.!

Does Dupehunter find 0 byte files?

No!

1. Some programs need such files with 0 bytes of file size.

2. A file doesn't have any contents, doesn't have the same content.

3. These files have negative consequences only on old file systems. Such files needs at minimum one cluster on FAT file systems. All users should change over to the better file system NTFS increased but at the latest since introduction of Windows XP. And there intelligent routines take care that these files need no more cluster space but are filed directly in the Master File Table (MFT). Therefore the space profit is zero when deleting 0 bytes of files at once.

Which file is the original?

No idea!

Dupehunter has high secure methods for the recognition of double files. False error indications are impossible with the algorithms MD5 and SHA1!

However, Dupehunter cannot query in any Windows system for data which would allow to say the file was created first and the other ones were copied. Dupehunter should permanently run in the background, log all file transactions and let these data flow to this. It gets even more complicated in networks or at data carriers which are inserted if not even impossible!

Therefore have the last responsibility left the user, which files he deletes and which is still needed. Dupehunter Professional cannot know which program could use which file still. No duplicate finder of the world can do this.
